This morning began with school visits. Introducing local kids to classical music, inspiring and stimulating kids to continue or pick up their own instrument. 

Young artists April and Stefenie visited St Joseph’s Primary School, Shuan, Hazuki and Cecile went to Te Kura Whakatipu o Kawarau and composer Lucy Mulgan engaged with kids at the Liger Academy. 

Stefenie introduced the kids to the clarinet, playing the ‘Peppa Pig’ theme song, which was met with much enthusiasm as they all recognised the song. April presented her violin, prompting lots of questions and engagement with the kids who were keen to talk about the various musical instruments they learn. They finished off the session with a song request of ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ which the kids sung along to. 

Lucy had a fantastic session at Liger Academy, introducing herself and music. She managed to show the kids her website and various video projects she’s worked on. This transitioned the discussion to writing music for film, podcasts and bounced around ideas about the approach to this.

This year the festival has opened up a connection with local iwi, Ngai Tahu. Artists, sponsors and staff were welcomed to Queenstown by Ngai Tahu, lead by Kāumatua Darren Rewi. Sir Michael Hill responded with his own inspiring words about music and Māori culture and director Anne Rodda introduced herself in Te Reo.
